Local Democracy

Local democracy legislation passed by the Minnesota legislature and signed by the Governor during the 2017 legislative session reduces duplicative regulation on your electric cooperative. This legislation impacts the distributed generation section of the statute, MN 216B.164, and ensures decisions that impact the member-owners of electric cooperatives such as Renville-Sibley Coop Power are made by the locally elected board of directors. To adopt the authority implementing this section of statue, Renville-Sibley must pass a resolution adopting this authority and adopt rules implementing this section of statute.  The resolution and rules will be reposted with any changes that may result upon completing our research and incorporating feedback from members and the board.  Renville-Sibley’s CEO DeeAnne Newville explains more about this legislation and resolution in her August Manager’s column.

Renville-Sibley will be hosting meetings to explain this legislation and review the draft rules and the proposed resolution. The meetings are scheduled as follows:

July 25 (Tuesday)

10 am at the Lion’s Den in Fairfax

2 pm and 7 pm at Renville-Sibley’s office in Danube

July 31 (Monday)

8 am at Renville-Sibley’s office in Danube (prior to the start of the board meeting)

August 10 (Thursday)

3 to 7 pm at the west gate entrance of the Renville County Fair in conjunction with the annual Family-a-Fair event

August 16 (Wednesday)

2 pm at the Lion’s Den in Fairfax

August 28 (Monday)

8 am at Renville-Sibley’s office in Danube (prior to the start of the board meeting)

If you are interested in this change, please contact us with your concerns or to let us know if you would like to attend a meeting. You may call the office at 320-826-2593 / 800-826-2693 or email DeeAnne Newville at dnewville@renville-sibley.coop.

Renville-Sibley's board will not take action on whether or not to adopt the resolution before the September board meeting.  We want to allow time for members to reach out to us with questions and concerns prior to the board taking any action.
