Scholar of the Month
Scholar of the Month Program
As a Touchstone Energy Cooperative, Renville-Sibley is founded on the four pillars of Integrity, Accountability, Innovation and a Commitment to Community. Based on these principles, Renville-Sibley's Scholar of the Month program recognizes high school students who also share these same values. Through this program, those students annually donate a total of $800 back to various programs at their local schools. At the Scholar of the Year banquet in May, the names of the monthly scholars who attended the banquet are entered into a random drawing for a $1,000 scholarship. Tegan Hicks, a student at Redwood Valley High school, was drawn as the winner of the $1,000 scholarship in 2016, Caden Hanna, also from Redwood Valley High School, was the 2017 $1,000 scholarship winner. The 2018 Scholar of the Year and winner of a $1,000 scholarship was Meghan Beckendorf, a student at Renville County West.
Here is how the program works. Each month, teachers from the local school districts will nominate a high school senior from their school who demonstrates outstanding academic, school and community achievements. Each school may submit one name per month. The teacher will complete a form documenting how that student meets the Touchstone Energy principles listed above. One name will be drawn each month from those names submitted from the schools with one student being awarded a $100 donation to be given to the student’s school on their behalf. The student chooses which program the donation should be given to at their school (music, sports, arts, etc.). The program will run from September through April. A banquet will be held in May for those students selected (and their family) throughout the year. One student will be selected from these candidates, by random drawing, as the winner of a $1,000 scholarship from Renville-Sibley. The scholarship money will be sent directly to the post-secondary school they will be attending in the fall.
The monthly winners will be featured on their local radio station (KLGR, KOLV or KNUJ), an ad placed in their local newspaper as well as Renville-Sibley’s newsletter, Cooperative Connections.
The program runs each school year from September thru April. Teachers will submit nominations to Renville-Sibley by the last day of each month to be entered into the drawing. The Scholar for that month will be selected by the 10th of the following month. Radio and newspaper promotions will follow.
We are excited to learn more about our outstanding high school seniors!
